I in recent times installed 2 sticks of 512mb RAM into my computer and now here is a strange humming noise. Is that typical?

Nope, check ur Ram memory status n make sure u enjoy 1gig of memo.
If you've put 2 Flash RAM drives ito your computer, the HUM is from your sturdy disk/OS is accesiing them. Will need couple of second more then access a local disc
